Documentary and lifestyle portraits

Documentary style portraits for brands and individuals.

Capturing real-life situations in an artistic way.  I’ll work with you to create and capture your stories through candid scenes.

Aiming for Authenticity

The goal of your shoot is to document life as it’s happening. Showing how your product works, your natural working environment or just capturing your feelings and emotions at a specific moment in time.

Though I will avoid posed portraits and artificial lighting, I will guide you and provide you with tips on the best places to have your photos taken, what clothes may look best and possibly reshoot scenes to capture you in the best light.

Planning Ahead of Time

It’s important to plan your shoot ahead of time to make the most of the photoshoot. Before arriving, we will discuss your requirements and what you envision the final results to look like. Usually, I would create a shared Pinterest Board for us to add suggestions to work from or you can send me photos of what inspires you. This would help put us both on the same page before the shoot.

I tend to arrive early before our booked time to have a look around the location in order to have a good idea of lighting, backgrounds and the amount of space available. It also helps to meet early to get to know each other to calm both our nerves and run through any last-minute details.

Capturing the day

My main aim on the day is firstly to ensure that everyone is comfortable. It’s difficult enough having a stranger watching you for hours let alone a stranger with a camera in your face for the whole time. I try to minimise nerves and anxiousness by getting to know you or asking you to talk about your work and processes. It’s important to know you are having fun and feel at ease in front of the camera.

Secondly when it comes to posing, I prefer to direct actions as opposed to giving you specific poses, although this sometimes has its place. It’s often best for each situation to evolve naturally, leaving you more relaxed to the point where you forget that the camera is even there.

Depending on the size of the shoot, it helps to have two cameras on hand so I’m always ready to shoot at any moment. This often results in more meaningful images and capturing details beyond the obvious shots.
